Midjourney, the AI image generation lab, are making a perhaps surprising pivot into healthcare hardware and building a full body ultrasonic scanner. Descending through a ring of half a million tiny transducers in a pool of warm water, a 60 second scan reconstructs a detailed 3D map of the body, akin to an MRI but (according to their press release) nearly a hundred times the speed, using only sound waves.
The first scanners are proposed to appear inside Midjourney Spa locations, the first opening in San Francisco in 2027, with full body medical scans as a casual side effect of a visit. Midjourney are targeting 50,000 scanners and a billion scans a month by 2031, beginning with body composition maps while FDA submissions continue.
Who better to innovate in medical imaging than a company famous for giving everyone extra fingers
